Mention Hartfield to people and they may respond by mentioning AA Milne and Winnie the Pooh.

They may even go further and cite the dark fate and last days of doomed Rolling Stone Brian Jones.

Hartfield, to us, brings to mind an effortlessly elegant contemporary extension to the charming home of Lynn and Jonathan Mathias.

A family residence that demonstrates, beautifully, what happens when deft architectural skill, instinctive taste and admirable command of quality of life are deployed in the reworking of a traditional property.

Delightful glimpses of Sussex heritage are revealed, framed by clean, precise proportions. Nothing is eradicated and everything is harmonized.

A kitchen designed, absolutely, with heavy use and relentless social vitality in mind.

A kitchen that meticulously references both rural tradition and urbane lifestyle.

A number (we’re still not quite sure how many) of dogs are also fortunate to call this their home.

A kitchen that works with, and responds to, the home.

Durable efficiency does not ever mean a compromise on beauty. Quite the opposite.

A warm and organic palette of tone and material composed into a perfect form of what we mean when we talk about the sophistication of simplicity.

Note: the photoshoot of the kitchen turned, delightfully, into a noisy, happy and extremely informal lunch with Jonathan and Lynn as effortlessly gracious hosts.

A delicious and inspiring pleasure to see how our kitchens get used by the people who own them.
